Meatpacking District in Stockholm has a long and important history tied to the city’s food supply. It was established in the early 20th century as a modern center for meat production and distribution. The background was the need for hygienic and centralized meat slaughter in a rapidly growing city. In 1904, the City of Stockholm decided to build a municipal slaughterhouse area in Enskede. Construction began in 1906, and the area was inaugurated in 1912.
